Every year thousands of South African school alumni lose touch with the people and the place that shaped them most. There is no single place to reconnect, share memories, support the school or find out what happened to the kid who sat next to them in Grade 10.Until now.
The Reunion Problem
It starts with a WhatsApp group created two weeks before a reunion. Half the class is missing because nobody has their numbers anymore. The organiser is chasing RSVPs manually. Photos from the event get shared and then disappear into someone's camera roll. A month later the group goes quiet and five more years pass.
The connection exists. The nostalgia exists. The desire to give back exists. What is missing is the platform to make it permanent, organised and meaningful.
We wanted a place where our alumni could actually find each other, share their stories and support the school they love - not just a WhatsApp group that dies after the reunion.
What a Proper Alumni System Does
A real alumni platform is not a Facebook group or a WhatsApp chat. It is a dedicated space built specifically for the community, where every feature serves a purpose and the school stays in control of what gets shared and how.
Old Way | Alumni System |
|---|---|
WhatsApp groups that go quiet | Permanent connected community |
Manual RSVP via email or phone | Built-in event RSVP system |
No way to find classmates | Search and connect by year group |
Donation drives via EFT and emails | Built-in giving and support features |
Memories lost in old photo albums | Then and now photos shared on the platform |
Admin managing everything manually | Full admin portal for complete control |
What BLUU Built for Potchefstroom Gimnasium
BLUU built a full Progressive Web App and website for the Potchefstroom Gimnasium alumni community — accessible on any device without needing to download anything from the App Store or Play Store.
Alumni can create and edit their own profiles, connect with classmates from their year, post in year group feeds like a private social network, upload their then and now photos — an old school picture next to who they are today — view their matric class photos and browse other year groups. When the school needs support, alumni can donate directly through the platform whether it is for a new piano, a bursary fund or a building project.
The social side is just as powerful. Alumni can RSVP to reunions, post memorials for former classmates and teachers, share stories and relive memories in a space built specifically for the Potch Gim community. Every piece of content — reunions, memorials, stories, groups — is managed through a dedicated admin portal that gives the school complete control over what gets published and how the community is run.
Since launching the platform has grown to over 250 active alumni users spanning multiple matric years — and that number keeps climbing as more former students discover the community is finally online.
Why a PWA Was the Right Call
Building this as a Progressive Web App rather than a native iOS or Android app means alumni can access it instantly from any browser on any device — no download required, no App Store approval delays, no friction. It works like an app, feels like an app and lives on your home screen like an app. For a community spanning multiple generations with varying levels of tech comfort, that accessibility matters.
What BLUU Built
A custom PWA and website connecting the Potchefstroom Gimnasium alumni community across years, cities and borders.
